Pain & Sacrifice

Critical Ingredients For Success

Pain and sacrifice aren’t experiences we often think of as good. You probably haven’t heard someone say, “it was such a great experience, there was pain and sacrifice the whole time, it was awesome.” A few things have recently reminded me that pain and sacrifice are critical ingredients to just about anything that is worthwhile in life.No-Pain-No-Gain

I recently saw an episode of Louie where he is talking with his neighbor, a wise and elderly physician played by Charles Grodin. Louie thinks his neighbor gave him bad advice to get involved romantically with a women whom he knew would be leaving the country forever. As Louie laments and misses his love, the wise physician neighbor says to Louie, “you know, you are a classic idiot!” You can view the scene here. Louie liked the good experiences like having fun, kissing, and hugging. Now he questions if it was worth it because he feels so sad that they can’t be together. You can’t experience the feelings of love if you’re not willing to risk and endure some pain and sacrifice.

Need Some Inspiration?

A little over five years ago when an old friend learned my wife and I were having our first child, he said “Congratulations! You’ll never sleep again.” While it hasn’t been that severe, there is an element of truth to it that many parents experience. Last night was a sleepless night. It was the night before kindergarten.

Walking to school he seemed full of excitement but something was off. I could hear the nerves in his voice and his grip on my hand grew tight. He wasn’t excited. He was scared.

How to Prevent the Leading Cause of Death Among Seniors

Renovating the Home to Provide a Safe Living Environment

Seniors at Home

In our Elder Law practice, many of our client’s most pressing concern is their ability to remain in their home for as long as possible.  In some cases, this desire proves to be impossible because of health issues beyond the client’s control.  For example, a severe stroke that causes paralysis may require almost constant attention that just cannot be provided in a home environment.  However, many of our clients end up unable to continue to live at home because of preventable conditions.  An example of this would be where a person’s health requires they be in a wheel chair, but their household bathroom is too small and therefore inaccessible.  Another example is where the house itself contains tripping hazards that lead to falls which in turn lead to long hospitalizations and possibly nursing home stays.

If a person desires to stay in their home for as long as possible, it is vitally important to make the home into a safe place that will be well suited as the person ages.  Contained in this articles are suggestions and ideas that can be used now to make sure your home will be safe in the future.

One of the biggest risks to seniors is falling.  In fact, falls are the leading cause of death among individuals over age 65.  In an effort to prevent falling, you should consider taking any or all of the following steps:

Keys to Healthy Senior Living

Different aged couple using a tablet pc outside

Healthy eating and regular physical activity are essential for helping the human body deal with the daily stress that life brings on the cardiovascular system. Our cardiovascular system depends upon healthy heart muscle tissue and elastic blood vessels that can tolerate changes in blood pressure and heart rate. There are many things in life that can cause our heart rate to increase dramatically as it is a natural response of our autonomic nervous system also known as the fight or flight response. Even the caffeine in a daily cup of coffee or tea in the morning will increase

Why I’m So Geeked Out Over the New Star Wars Movie

I remember the first time I saw Star Wars. I had spent the night with a friend of mine that lived in the Mobile Home park next to our house. His family had this crazy new technology called Cable Television and a new channel called HBO (Home Box Office). I remember watching intently this incredible movie of good vs. evil. From then on, every stick was a light saber or a laser gun. If only I had the collection of Star Wars Action Figures, Vehicles and Playsets that I owned, I probably could retire. (Maybe not, but I wish I still had my Millennium Falcon…they are turning those things into sweet bass guitars…but I digress.)

My Dad took me to the old Oaklawn theater to see “The Empire Strikes Back” when it came out. If I wasn’t already, I was hooked. Now, fast forward 35 years, and there is a new movie, “The Force Awakens,” coming out in December. Last night, I set my DVR to record a meaningless (to me anyway) Monday Night Football game just so I wouldn’t miss the trailer for the new movie. After the trailer premiered, I got online and ordered my tickets for opening night. Why is a 42 year old man so geeked out about a science fiction movie?
